The field of personalized mental health and substance use management has gained significant attention due to the rising prevalence of psychiatric disorders, which have become a substantial public health burden. Recent statistics highlight the severity of the issue, with millions of Americans affected by substance use disorders, including opioid use disorder (OUD). The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these challenges, leading to a global increase in anxiety and depression, and a surge in opioid-related deaths. In response, technology-based interventions have emerged as promising solutions. Over the past few decades, advancements in mobile applications and body sensor networks have paved the way for prescription digital therapeutics (PDTs), which are software-based treatments for serious diseases. These technologies, including wearable and implantable devices, offer new methods to monitor and manage mental health and substance use. Despite their potential, many clinicians remain unfamiliar with the evidence supporting PDTs. This research topic seeks to explore the role of PDTs in generating clinical data, health economics, and outcomes research, as well as their effectiveness in treating psychiatric disorders.

This Research Topic aims to investigate the potential of body sensor networks, mobile application monitoring, and prescription digital therapeutics in providing personalized treatment for mental health and substance use disorders. The primary objectives include examining the clinical effectiveness of PDTs, understanding the integration of digital biomarkers in treatment, and evaluating the real-world application of these technologies. Key questions include how these technologies can enhance clinical decision-making and improve long-term treatment outcomes for individuals with psychiatric disorders.
