Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a growing global health crisis, responsible for a significant portion of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The primary NCDs include cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes, obesity, and cancer, which are largely preventable. Therefore, effective early screening, management, and prevention are high priorities for healthcare systems, researchers, and patients. It is well-established that prevention and management through lifestyle changes, such as regular physical exercise, are strongly linked to a reduced risk of premature mortality and major non-NCDs. However, poor adherence to physical exercise programs is frequently reported, influenced by various barriers, including time constraints, exercise characteristics, technology, health knowledge, and enjoyment.
This research topic aims to investigate innovative approaches to exercise assessment and prescription in NCDs, specifically focusing on cardiovascular conditions (such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, and chronic heart failure) and pulmonary diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Our objective is to provide guidance on how sports and rehabilitation professionals can effectively screen, prevent, and manage these patients. We invite original research that explores feasible assessment tools and technologies to enhance the early detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of NCDs. Additionally, our emphasis is on exploring unconventional and innovative physical exercise regimens, including aerobic exercise, resistance training, concurrent training, breathing techniques, aquatic exercises, and neuromuscular training protocols, as well as educational and prevention strategies, to improve patient adherence and outcomes.
We welcome a wide range of contributions, including original research, systematic reviews, state-of-the-art reviews, mini-reviews, case reports, study protocols, and opinion articles, that provide new insights into the field of exercise assessment and prescription, as well as physical rehabilitation to optimize the screening, prevention, and management of NCDs.
