Fungal infections have become a significant clinical challenge in the twenty first century due to the continuous rise of compromised populations such as ADIS patients, organ transplant recipients, patients on chemotherapy and increasing geriatric populations worldwide. Management of ubiquitous fungal infections such as candidiasis is a major clinical problem and a substantial economic burden due the emergence of drug resistance strains and undesirable properties of the existing antifungal agents. Previously, we discussed the new findings pertaining to the pathogenic mechanisms of fungal infections and the novel antifungal strategies in the research topic “Antifungal drug discovery; new theories and new therapies”. Taking a step ahead, in this research topic, we intend to elaborate on the new developments and approaches taken place in the translational research on fungal infections, from bench to bedside. The dialogue between bench scientists and clinicians is timely and necessary in order to develop new management strategies for the millions of patients suffering from various forms of fungal infections.
We hope this Research Topic will serve as a useful guide for the researchers, clinicians as well as administrative bodies to shape up the antifungal drug discovery approaches in future.
