Recent advances highlight the existence of common mechanisms underlying many neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s and ALS, all of which show overlapping molecular, cellular and behavioral phenotypes. It is now accepted that neurodegeneration and neuronal death are the final manifestation of pathophysiological changes that arise many years before behavioral symptoms. Hence, unraveling the early molecular mechanisms is of pivotal importance to understanding the pathogenesis of these diseases, identifying novel therapeutic targets, and developing treatments to delay, slow or block disease progression.
Recent advances in stem cell biology, genomics, gene-editing, systems pharmacology, and bioinformatics are all contributing to a broad, multi-modal understanding of disease mechanism, and are providing a new generation of tools to enable therapeutic intervention. Exploring the shared commonality of disease mechanisms opens up opportunities to identify targets that may of therapeutic benefit to more than one disease.
This Research Topic thus aims to explore the commonality across neurodegenerative disorders, increase our understanding of their pathogenesis, and articulate strategies to use this knowledge to deliver novel therapeutic tools.
