Following the success of the Research Topic, “Actinobacteria in special and extreme habitats: diversity, functional roles, and environmental adaptations, we are happy to launch a second edition. In the first edition, experts all around the globe have contributed their work which includes 4 reviews and 13 original articles that focus on diversity and applications of actinobacteria from special and extreme ecological niche such as desert, cold springs, marine, mangrove soil, volcanic caves, mountain zone, limestone deposits, endophytes, coral and sponge. These articles make us rethink intriguing questions such as, what are the limits and fundamental of actinobacteria.
Though plenty of work was being published on actinobacteria diversity and their applications but, still their diversity in special and extreme habitat, functional role, and environmental adaptations are yet to be explored. We encourage submissions that make a substantial and updated contribution for actinobacteria in special and extreme habitats, addressing fundamental questions with potential interest to a wide audience. Manuscripts focusing on the actinobacterial diversity study in special and extreme habitat using culture dependent and independent method, function of actinobacterial populations and their interaction with biotic and abiotic factors, environmental adaptations, removal of toxic compounds, processes concern in the production of useful metabolites/ materials and areas of genetics and genomics are encouraged. Genomic information will primarily be applied to support progress in actinobacterial taxonomy by phylogenomic analyses, but also for genome mining towards the discovery of novel bioactive compounds such as urgently needed novel antibiotics.
