Frontiers in Pediatrics is delighted to present the ‘Reviews in’ series of article collections. Reviews in Pediatric Pulmonology will publish high-quality scholarly review papers on key topics in pediatric pulmonology. It aims to highlight recent advances in the field, whilst emphasizing important directions and new possibilities for future inquiries. We anticipate the research presented will promote discussion in the pediatric pulmonology community that will translate to best practice applications in clinical, public health and policy settings. The Reviews in Pediatric Pulmonology collection welcomes full-length, mini or systematic review papers. New articles will be added to this collection as they are published.

BackgroundAcute upper respiratory tract infection (AURI) includes infections caused by a variety of pathogens and is one of the most common diseases in children. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) injections are widely used for treating AURI in clinical practice, but their efficacy is unclear because of the lack of clear evidence. In this study, a network meta-analysis (NMA) was used to evaluate the efficacy and safety of TCM injections in the treatment of AURI and to provide a reference for clinical treatment.</sec>MethodsEight databases were searched, namely, PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), the Wanfang database, and the Chinese Scientific Journal database (VIP). The search time period was from 1 January 2013 to 1 November 2023. Randomized controlled trials of herbal injections for treating AURI were searched. The Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool was used to assess the quality of these studies. Review Manager 5.4 and Stata 15.0 were used for the NMA.</sec>ResultsA total of 81 papers involving 11,736 patients were included. These involved five different TCM injections, namely, Xiyanping injection (XYPI), Qingkailing injection (QKLI), Reduning injection (RDNI), Yanhuning injection (YHNI), and Tanreqing injection (TRQI). QKLI was most effective in alleviating symptoms of fever and improving overall clinical effectiveness. TRQI was most effective in relieving cough symptoms. YHNI was most effective in alleviating sore throat, runny nose, and nasal congestion. Efficacy of five different traditional Chinese medicine injections in acute upper respiratory tract infection in children: a network meta-analysis and systematic review

Generalized respiratory and bulbar muscle weakness translates into diverse and complex clinical consequences necessitating strict follow-up and specialized care. The natural history of SMA has evolved drastically in recent years as a result of the introduction of novel, disease-modifying therapies. While the impact of these therapies on motor function is well described in literature, its consequence for respiratory management has not been extensively studied. In this review we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the respiratory morbidities, their follow-up, management, and the impact of novel therapies in SMA.

Respiratory morbidity in patients with spinal muscular atrophy—a changing world in the light of disease-modifying therapies

Primary quantitative and qualitative studies, published in peer-reviewed journals that focused on AYA with a confirmed diagnosis of asthma were considered if they focused on challenges encountered by AYA with asthma during the transition process and/or components of transitional care and their outcomes assessed.</sec>ResultsA total of 855 studies were initially identified and 6 articles were included in this systematic literature review. Several challenges experienced by AYA with asthma were identified including maintaining medication adherence, the need to take responsibility and being involved, understanding their condition and its severity, feeling left out of the care system, and experiencing a lack of engagement. The identified transitional care components included a standardized form for medical data transmission, a joint consultation and to offer several longer consultations.</sec>ConclusionSeveral international guidelines for asthma care recommend implementing transition programs in the care for AYA with asthma. Such transition programs should include a comprehensive and individualized approach addressing several challenges faced, to ensure optimal outcomes post-transition. However, to date, data on effective components of transitional care facilitating good outcomes were found to be limited. This systematic review underscores the need for larger studies evaluating the effect of the components of transition programs.</sec>

Breathing across ages: a systematic review on challenges and components of transitional care for young people with asthma

Respiratory viruses represent the most frequent cause of mortality, morbidity and high healthcare costs for emergency visits and hospitalization in the pediatric age. Respiratory viruses can circulate simultaneously and can potentially infect the same host, determining different types of interactions, the so-called viral interference. The role of viral interference has assumed great importance since December 2019, when the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) came on the scene. The aim of this narrative review is to present our perspective regarding research in respiratory virus interference and discuss recent advances on the topic because, following SARS-CoV-2 restrictions mitigation, we are experimenting the co-circulation of respiratory viruses along with SARS-CoV-2. This scenario is raising many concerns about possible virus-virus interactions, both positive and negative, and the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic management of these coinfections. Moreover, we cannot rule out that also climatic conditions and social behaviours are involved. Thus, this situation can lead to different population epidemic dynamics, including changes in the age of the targeted population, disease course and severity, highlighting the need for prospective epidemiologic studies and mathematical modelling able to predict the timing and magnitude of epidemics caused by SARS-CoV-2/seasonal respiratory virus interactions in order to adjust better public health interventions.

Given the burgeoning volume of research literature associated with pediatric MPP in recent years, it becomes imperative to undertake a bibliometric analysis aimed at delineating the current research landscape and emerging trends, thereby furnishing a framework for subsequent investigations.</sec>MethodsA comprehensive literature search targeting pediatric MPP was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection. After the removal of duplicate entries through Endnote software, the remaining articles were subject to scientometric analysis via Citespace software, VOSviewer software and R language, focusing on variables such as publication volume, contributing nations, institutions and authors, references and keywords.</sec>ResultsA total of 1,729 articles pertinent to pediatric MPP were included in the analysis. China and the United States emerged as the nations with the highest publication output. Italian scholar Susanna Esposito and Japanese scholar Kazunobu Ouchi were the most influential authors in the domain of pediatric MPP. Highly-cited articles primarily focused on the epidemiological investigation of pediatric MPP, the clinical characteristics and treatment of macrolide-resistant MPP, and biomarkers for refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP). From the corpus of 1,729 articles, 636 keywords were extracted and categorized into ten clusters: Cluster #0 centered on molecular-level typing of macrolide-resistant strains; Cluster #1 focused on lower respiratory tract co-infections; Clusters #2 and #6 emphasized other respiratory ailments caused by MP; Cluster #3 involved biomarkers and treatment of RMPP; Clusters #4 and #9 pertained to extrapulmonary complications of MPP, Clusters #5 and #7 addressed etiological diagnosis of MPP, and Cluster #8 explored pathogenic mechanisms.</sec>ConclusionsThe past few years have witnessed extensive attention directed towards pediatric MPP. Research in pediatric MPP principally revolves around diagnostic techniques for MP, macrolide resistance, complications of MPP, treatment and diagnosis of RMPP, and elucidation of pathogenic mechanisms. The present study provides pediatric clinicians and researchers with the research status and focal points in this field, thereby guiding the orientation of future research endeavors.</sec>
