There are many global challenges in education, including the inequality that exists in opportunities for high-quality learning and the gaps that exist in the access to new digital technology and learning environments. These and other educational challenges call for research and innovation of high-quality teaching and learning, as well as for solutions that would create equality in education that is in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG4), advocating for sustainable development in education. The UNESCO report (2021) Re-imagining our Futures Together emphasizes the need for a new social contract for education to repair injustices, while transforming the future. We need research and innovative solutions to address the urgent needs and challenges in education in order to pave the ways to our sustainable futures.
Our Research Topic "Education for the Future: Learning and Teaching for Sustainable Development in Education" is based on the abstract submission of the "Education for the Future"-themed conference that will be organized at the University of Helsinki on 15th-16th of August, 2023 (https://gintl.org/events/jolii-gintl-global-conference-2023/). It draws from SDG4 and the UNESCO report (2021) Re-imagining our Futures Together.
The Research Topic will feature research-based solutions that address global educational challenges and SDG4 from wider perspectives in education. The topic itself offers an arena for carrying out these discussions and for sharing both research and solutions to realise education for the future. The topics are approached from different perspectives and with various methodological choices as well as cross-culture international research cooperation.
This Research Topic includes a list of research articles with wider perspectives from various areas in education. In short, our purpose is to contribute to the larger scope of research on education for the future.
The scope of the Research Topic is very wide. Potential contributors to this collection will principally include the following topics:
- Teacher education;
- Teaching and learning;
- Technology used in education;
- Early childhood education;
- Special education/inclusive education;
- Education polices and practices, etc.
