We are not alone in our body. We share our body with the huge number of microorganisms and viruses. Our interaction with them represents a continuum, expanding from commensal and mutualistic relationships to severe infectious diseases. While a very substantial progress has been made in our understanding of pathology of infectious diseases, other, more subtle interactions that could lead to human disease are not fully understood. Microorganisms and viruses actively interfere with our life, modulating our immune system, metabolism, even our mood. They contribute to the development of diseases that are major causes of mortality, in particular cancer and autoimmune processes. At the same time, there is also the flip side of the coin (hygiene theory and allergies).
We offer this Research Topic to discuss the following issues:
1. Involvement of viruses and microorganisms in modulating human immune system and metabolic processes,
2. Infectious agents in autoimmune diseases and inflammation
