The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an integral part of their 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and ambitiously aim to tackle urgent world problems of poverty as well as climate crisis. There are 17 SDGs in total and their shared aim is to bring ‘peace and prosperity for people and the planet’ with the outcome that hopefully this transition towards a consciously more sustainable way of living will help to balance existing inequalities and improve quality of life whilst simultaneously managing the effects of climate change. By focusing on the integral pillars of People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership these goals aim to be achieved through improving health care, education, reducing inequality and spurring economic growth through sustainable solutions. As a member of the SDGs Publishers Compact, Frontiers is committed to?accelerating progress to achieve the goals.?
This Research Topic will be addressing Sustainable Development Goal 7 which is to ‘ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all’. The transition towards more sustainable energy is of paramount importance when creating a more sustainable planet and working towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The aim of this collection series featured in the journal will be to highlight greener energy solutions and emerging technologies within the field of Energy Research across multiple disciplines.
This Research Topic will address SDG#7 from a Wind, Wave and Tidal Energy perspective. Innovative technologies have received great attention recently to advance wind, wave and tidal energy capture systems for reducing cost, enhancing reliability and efficiency. The purpose of this collection is to publish the most exciting research with respect to the development of innovative wind, wave and tidal energy systems for achieving SDG7, providing a rapid review and publishing process, and to disseminate the articles freely for research, teaching, and reference purposes. High quality papers are encouraged for publication that are directly related to various aspects described below.
- Concept or methodology for novel wind/wave/tidal energy capture system.
- Hybrid renewable energy frameworks that integrate wind/wave/tidal energy conversion systems.
- Wind/wave/tidal energy storage and grid integration
- WEC/TEC applications and designs that can support the Blue Economy (ocean observations, aquaculture, desalination, etc.).
