The global rise in ‘fast fashion’ trends has led to increased production of textiles, urging a shift in this sector’s water/wastewater treatment and management. Clothing manufacturing is a water-intensive process, generating high volumes of wastewater during bleaching, dyeing, printing, and finishing. As there are different sources along the production process, textile wastewater can contain a variety of hazardous pollutants, e.g., dyes, metals, surfactants, and other micropollutants, including contaminants of emerging concern like microfibers and microplastics.
Textile dyes are often viewed as a major source of concern due to their immediate effect on the color of water bodies, often affecting the photosynthesis of aquatic life. Furthermore, dyes and heavy metals can be dangerous to animals due to carcinogenicity, genotoxicity, and bioaccumulative potential. For this reason, more effective and adequate treatments before discharge into the environment are required to protect the aquatic flora and fauna.
Current textile wastewater treatment often includes a combination of coagulation/flocculation, membranes, adsorption, and biological treatment processes which are often effective in removing pollutants that have higher concentrations. However, due to the variety in wastewater composition, treatment processes must be adequately monitored and improved upon so that pollutants of emerging concern can also be effectively removed to attain appropriate water quality for wastewater reuse. For this purpose, applying innovative water treatment technologies is paramount. A higher treatment performance can be achieved by improving conventional treatment processes and/or advancing new approaches using emerging technologies, such as novel adsorbents and membranes, advanced oxidation processes, and electrochemical treatment.
In this Research Topic, we aim to feature new research in water and wastewater treatment and management in the textile industry in the abovementioned scope. We welcome original research and review submissions on the following topics:
• chemical analysis and characterization of water and wastewater flows in the textile industry
• advances in conventional treatment processes applied to textile wastewaters, such as biological treatment, coagulation/flocculation, and adsorption
• novel approaches in the use of emerging technologies in textile wastewater treatment, such as removal of dyes, metals, and micropollutants
• coupling and integration of treatment processes with the aim of higher effluent quality and wastewater reuse, including case studies
• modeling of innovative treatment processes.
