About this Research Topic
Recent research has demonstrated the importance of understanding the impact of changes in fluvial systems on the marine environment. These changes can have a wide range of consequences, from alterations in water temperature, salinity, and oxygen levels, to changes in the abundance and distribution of marine species. Remote sensing and other advances in technology have enabled researchers to better monitor and analyze these changes and their impacts on the marine environment while nature-based solutions have been implemented to mitigate the consequences of human activities. Restoration of wetland habitats and the implementation of green infrastructure are examples of such solution. Additionally, the implementation of buffer zones and riparian corridors can help reduce runoff and filter pollutants, while the reintroduction of native species can support the resilience of the environment. Finally, the implementation of community-based adaptation programs can help to increase awareness of the importance of environmental conservation and management. Therefore, it is essential that we continue to research and implement strategies to mitigate the impacts of changes in fluvial environment on the marine environment.
Nature-based solutions play an important role in coastal management and resiliency by reducing the risks posed by coastal erosion, flooding, biodiversity loss and other impacts of climate change and anthropogenic activities. In this way, this Research Topic proposes to raise studies focused on the implementation and results acquired through nature-based solutions that improve the quality of the relationship between the river and marine environments. Studies focusing on the interactions between the two environments are also encouraged, as they provide a database for new proposed solutions.
