In the current digital age, there has been a shift towards a more holistic approach to public health, which recognizes the importance of addressing social and environmental factors that contribute to health and well-being. This has led to an increased focus on the role that arts and design can play in creating environments, interventions, and communication tools that support healthy behaviors and improve health outcomes.
A growing body of research supports the use of arts and design in public health. Studies have shown that art-based interventions can improve mental health, such as addressing stress, anxiety, and depression. It also improves social connections and promotes positive health awareness and behavior, such as creating effective public health campaigns that encourage people to get vaccinated, practice safe sex, or take other measures to protect their health. Additionally, the use of design and architecture to create healthy environments has been shown to increase physical activity, reduce exposure to pollution, and improve overall health outcomes. For example, designing buildings, public spaces, and urban environments that encourage physical activity, social interaction, and healthy behaviors can have a positive impact on public health.
Considering arts and design are significant in improving overall health status, specialized design practices and multi-level art-based interventions are needed to be further studied, discovering the innovative solution to public health problems.
This Research Topic aims to summarize original research articles, reviews, and opinion pieces that explore the current state of arts and design in public health, the health-influencing mechanism of arts and design, and the relationship between practices of arts and design and key health outcomes. In identifying approaches to accurately measure, assess, and improve public health, the current Research Topic strives to further substantiate the significance of arts and design in the field of public health.
We welcome a series of original research, review, synthesis, and systematic review articles from researchers in the field covering (but not limited to) the following topics:
• Design-based interventions for chronic disease management
• Design of facilities and products to improve healthcare outcomes
• Impact of art-based intervention on health outcomes
• Designing healthy environments
• Promoting health equity via social design
• Developing and evaluating community-based arts and design programs
• Evaluating the effectiveness of arts and design interventions
• Role of design and architecture in health promotion
• Art and music therapy for mental health
• Effects of color and lighting on health outcomes
• Analysing the effects of different design elements on health outcomes
• Addressing social isolation through arts and design-based interventions
