Aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector in the world. However, during the production cycle, fish are constantly exposed to challenges that can adversely affect fish growth performance, health and welfare, increasing the susceptibility to infectious diseases and eventually mortality. To achieve a more robust and resilient fish, host-microbiota interaction, fish metabolism and immune responses are critical. These parameters can be modulated through nutrition during different stages of fish development. Nutrition plays a key role in the composition and function of the gut microbiome, and can regulate both local (e.g., GALT) and systemic responses in other main immune organs and tissues (e.g., head kidney, spleen, gills, and skin). Novel approaches on sustainable feed solutions, including use of functional feeds, can therefore contribute to fish health, welfare and reduce mortality, thereby strengthening aquaculture globally.
This special issue will highlight and discuss the importance of nutrition, specifically of functional feed components and their effects on immunity and fish resilience to overcome the needs of the aquaculture industry. Nutrition-based solutions need to be implemented in practical farming conditions and in an effective and strategic approach, using nutritional programming and immuno-training as examples. Furthermore, comparative studies in aquaculture-related species are also needed to fully understand the effects of functional feeds, both locally and systemically, in important immune organs. Thus, our aim is to collect recent novel research being carried out in chrono-immunonutrition in aquaculture, to provide ground knowledge about this topic, considering novel bio-active compounds, techniques and strategies.
