The United States-Mexico border region is a geographic area where people come together with a diversity of cultural, economic, and political characteristics, and symbolizes the similarities and differences that exist between these two nations. Consequently, for purposes of public health, this geographic space requires the joint efforts of local, state, and federal governments as well as non-governmental organizations. Healthy Border (HB) 2020 is a binational initiative of the U.S.-México Border Health Commission that focuses on the public health issues prevalent among binational border populations. The main purpose of HB 2020 is to provide a framework for border region public health goals and the actions needed to improve the health of U.S. and México border residents.
HB 2020 addresses five public health priorities of binational concern, including but not limited to chronic and degenerative diseases; infectious diseases; maternal and child health; mental health and addiction; and injury prevention. These priorities together with environmental health have also been defined for the members of the Binational Border Health Thematic Network (BBHTN) as their main research topics, in order to generate knowledge based on evidence. In turn, these findings can serve as the basis for innovative public health policies in the border region. For the dissemination of this knowledge, the publication of a dedicated collection in a high-impact journal such as Frontiers in Public Health has been proposed. The goal for such publication is to showcase and disseminate among stakeholders the diversity and richness of public health research carried out along the US-Mexico border region.
