Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease (CPPD) is an umbrella term that encompasses all instances of calcium pyrophosphate crystal (CPP) occurrence in joints and periarticular tissues. In the last years, many international research groups have joined their efforts in order to provide answers to the great number of unmet needs that characterize this disease, including pathogenetic aspects, epidemiological features, clinical manifestations, and of course treatment. These efforts will hopefully allow us to count on classification criteria and validated outcome measures in the next few years, which could be used in observational studies and trials to further improve our knowledge of this multifaceted disease.
The objective of this Research Topic is to create a collection of articles that provide cutting-edge evidence on the available knowledge on CPPD: a photograph of CPPD in 2023-2024. In this historical moment for this disease, a summary of the actual situation will hopefully further increase awareness and stimulate research on this neglected disease.
All kinds of articles (reviews, systematic reviews, original research, case reports) will be considered for publication. Case reports could be considered only if of exceptional interest and originality. Articles may deal with any aspect of CPPD: from pathogenesis to epidemiology, from asymptomatic CPPD characteristics to severe CPPD disease, and from imaging to treatment. Opinion articles on any aspect of CPPD will be also considered for publication if written by internationally recognized researchers.
