The changes that have occurred in today's society require Higher Education to be highly efficient in the academic and professional preparation of young people who enter university.
For that reason, universities around the globe have been advocating in recent years for an improvement in the quality of teaching-learning processes. As an example, the World University Consortium (2023) currently presents, among its most urgent and priority objectives, the identification of the best evaluative practices of the educational processes that are carried out at the University, as well as the recognition of the actions aimed at improving educational processes based on scientific evidence. In this way, it seeks to distinguish all those educational actions that are at the forefront; going from actions at the micro level, such as individual teaching practices in the classroom (such as the application of the flipped classroom or the use of augmented reality); up to actions taken at the macro level such as those proposed in the Horizon Europe 2020 strategy.
Thus, this evidence and guidelines from the competent bodies in educational matters indicate that there is a need for an urgent update of the knowledge about the university teaching-learning process, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of Higher Education and thus achieving a more competent, complete and updated training for future generations. Also, to know the characteristics of this new kind of students became crucial, as it has to be the base of any intervention.
The objective of this research topic is the compilation of multiple and diverse experiences/actions, all of them aimed at improving the management of the learning processes of university students. In addition, research about the characteristics of university students are welcome.
Furthermore, the monograph will turn out to be a compilation of studies about the main further of current students and of new and emerging measures and practices developed in order to improve the educational results of Higher Education students and also to promote the quality of tertiary education.
Under this mission, this monograph will accept different types of works, such as research articles, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses, all of them with the purpose of highlighting the most enriching and innovative practices, strategies, and actions in relation to teaching practice in Higher Education or look into new features of current university students.
Consequently, it is expected that the monograph represents an important advance in scientific knowledge in terms of improving the quality of teaching-learning processes in Higher Education, making it possible, at the same time, to replicate good practices in different universities.
Some relevant contributions that could make up this Research Topic successfully could be devoted to:
-Describe the characteristics of university students.
-Advanced and avant-garde actions in the training of Higher Education teachers;
-New models to explain learning outcomes at university;
-New uses of traditional teaching and learning methods in Degrees;
-Modern and/or novel teaching and learning methods in Higher Education;
-Strategies/actions to prevent university desertion;
-Actions aimed at mitigating school failure in university classrooms.
