Impressive technological developments over the past few decades coupled with strides made in information technology within laboratory applications have played a significant role in improving the quality and clinical utility of laboratory testing. These technological advancements include the increased utilization and commercialization of methodologies like high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry.
The combination of chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry allows for multiple analytes to be measured on a single sample with a high degree of specificity. The increased commercialization of this methodology has made it more accessible. Further engineering developments have allowed for significant progress in miniaturization of many aspects of the laboratory testing processes.

This research topic aims to highlight recent developments in clinical laboratory investigations and critically assess utility for the diagnosis and management of endocrine and metabolic related disorders. A further aim is to encourage dissemination of this information outside of the laboratory setting into the clinical community to foster increased interdisciplinary research into the utilization and role of these new tests/ methods in the assessment of patient and other health outcomes.
