Internet gaming disorder has become a worldwide mental health issue, epidemiological studies showed that 3-11% of adolescents or young adults showed Internet gaming disorder symptoms. Significantly, it has been included in the appendix of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, as a topic deserving more research.
Internet gaming disorder has been regarded as a kind of behavioral addiction, and existing evidence shows that it shares behavioral and brain abnormalities with other addiction-related disorders, including substance use disorders and pathological gambling. Although there was growing interest among researchers in the study of Internet gaming disorder, and previous studies have significantly advanced our understanding of Internet gaming disorder from a neuroscience prospective, the precise neural mechanisms underlying the development, progress, and remission of Internet gaming disorder still remains largely unclear.
This Research Topic aims to gather a group of researchers to progress such investigation. Studies using the following methods (including but not limited to) neuropsychological assessment, EEG, fMRI, structural MRI, DTI, PET, computational modeling, genetic, as well as clinical trials or reviews, to study Internet gaming disorder are welcome.
