About this Research Topic
Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of 20 conditions (such as leishmaniasis, leprosy, onchocerciasis, podoconiosis, scabies, helminthiases, snakebite envenoming, etc) that are mainly prevalent in tropical areas and that disproportionately affect impoverished communities, women, and children.
In 2021 the World Health Organization (WHO) launched its roadmap for NTDs 2021-2030, which is aimed at increasing the prevention and control of NTDs. One of the three targets of this roadmap focus on integrating interventions and services for NTDs and coordinating actions.
The current provision of care for people with NTDs is weak, suffering from inadequate infrastructure and limited resources, and relying mostly upon existing community staff such as community health workers.
While the majority of NTD programs tend to be organized as parallel autonomous interventions, there is a realization that integrating NTD services into the existing health care system as well as coordinating with better-resourced programs such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria programs would improve the efficiency of NTD control.
The proposed issue will focus on increasing the efficiency of existing healthcare services and NTD programs, developing and implementing new interventions, and improving access to healthcare for people with NTDs. The topics may include but are by no means limited to:
1. Developing, piloting, and evaluating healthcare services for people with NTDs;
2. Optimizing existing and implementing new programs for NTD control;
3. Integrating NTD services into routine healthcare;
4. Developing and improving infrastructure for NTD services;
5. Training staff and increasing capacity for NTD control;
6. Integrating NTD surveillance and monitoring with existing surveillance and monitoring programs (e.g. for infectious diseases);
7. Improving access to NTD care in remote and impoverished areas;
8. Raising awareness of NTDs among the population and decision-makers.
9. Explore the role of implementation/scale-up models and theories in the context of services for NTDs.
