The Critical Zone (CZ) is defined as the zone that extends from the top of the canopy to the groundwater table and is where most life occurs. Past evidence of the CZ is recorded across the globe in the Quaternary stratigraphic record as paleo-CZs, archiving information pertaining to the past atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, and anthrosphere.
This Research Topic encourages submissions that examine the possible role(s) the paleo-Critical Zone (paleo-CZ) has played in shaping hominin evolution during the past 2.6 million years, extending from earliest evidence of hominins to the recently proposed Anthropocene.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to studies in paleohydrology, paleovegetation, paleoclimate, paleolimnology, and paleopedology. Submissions that include collaborations between the disciplines of Earth Science, Paleoecology, Paleoanthropology, and Archaeology are especially encouraged.
