Long COVID is a clinical syndrome mainly characterized by fatigue, myalgia, shortness of breath, sleep disorders, cognitive dysfunction, and behavioral alternations, which overall have a negative impact on the quality of life. In addition, a reduction in physical activity is expected.
The pathophysiology of Long COVID is complex and not well defined however, endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and gut dysbiosis have been proposed as important mechanisms involved in the persistence of symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection and in the development of Long COVID syndrome. Amino acids, micronutrients, and probiotics play a crucial role in cell metabolism, energy production, and the functioning of the immune system. Furthermore, nutraceutical and dietary supplements may exert important anti-inflammatory and antioxidant functions. Similarly, the beneficial role of physical activity and exercise regarding endothelial function is well established.
It has been suggested that physical activity may be advantageous for individuals affected by Long COVID syndrome, however, this is still debatable. Management of Long COVID syndrome requires a multidimensional approach including both nutritional and lifestyle changes.
In this Research Topic, we aim to receive high-quality papers of all types that describe the role of nutritional and dietary interventions and physical activity in Long COVID syndrome. Specifically, we are interested in receiving manuscript covering, but not limited to:
