Pharmacovigilance has historically been based on spontaneous reports. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines pharmacovigilance as "the science and activities relating to detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any medicine-related problem" (WHO 2004).
Pharmacoepidemiological studies can supplement the role of identification, as the spontaneous reporting of adverse drug reactions and conventional pharmacovigilance, can alert us to other, potentially more major, problems, medicine-related or otherwise.
Interest in coupling signal detection methods in large pharmacovigilance databases has been consistently demonstrated, for example, in the use of bisphosphantes when treating osteonecrosis of the jaw, and in the correlation between withdrawal syndrome and antidepressants.
This Research Topic aims to closely look at pharmacovigilance and pharmacoepidemiology, and their resulting influence on public health and safety. This Research Topic welcomes submissions on the following subjects:
