We are delighted to present this Frontiers in Plant Science special issue, 'Women in Plant Science - Linking Genome to Phenome' series of article collections. This Research Topic is headlined by members of our Plant Science editorial board.
According to the 2021 UNESCO science report, women are still a minority in sciences as only 33 % of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. In fact, to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO, science and gender equality are essential. In order to create a more inclusive discipline, and mindset, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers, UNESCO celebrates “The International Day of Women and Girls in Science” on 8th February 2023 #February11.
Therefore, Frontiers in Plant Science is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all fields of Plant Science - Linking Genome to Phenome.
The aim of this collection is to provide insights into the multifaceted and multidisciplinary domain of Plant Genome to Phenome Research. Original manuscripts (both Research Papers and Reviews) that present experimental advances, methodological novelties as well as current theoretical views in the field will be welcome. Contributions addressing current challenging and compelling problems, multidisciplinary views, as well as applications of genome-to-phenome for sustainable environmental management are particularly encouraged.
A grand challenge for the 21st century is meeting the nutritional and bioenergy needs of a growing world population in the face of climate variability and constraints on natural resources. As the Earth’s climate changes and demands for sustainable agricultural practices increase, evolving pests and pathogens, rising temperatures, extreme precipitation events, and social needs will raise the importance of progress in the plant sciences. A critical area of research for meeting this grant challenge is linking the plant genome to observable and measurable traits referred to as the plant phenome.
We aim to promote inclusivity for women, represent a diversity of research approaches and methodologies, support multidisciplinary teams to advance research in plant phenomics and genomics, and more importantly linking both to a sustainable future.
The 'Women in Plant Science - Linking Genome to Phenome' series of articles collection welcomes research articles, reviews, and opinion pieces. This collection of articles features perspectives of nowadays contributions, but not limited to:
- Affordable phenotyping
- High-throughput phenotyping (e.g., Rhizotrons, x-ray CT scanners, UAVs)
- Computer science in phenotyping and genotyping
- Genomic prediction/ genomic selection and marker discovery
- Data sharing
- Big Data analysis including machine learning and AI
- Tools, software, and methods for phenotyping or genomics
Please note: to be considered for this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman.
