About this Research Topic
Immune cell functions are deeply affected, leading to the hyper-production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and this can be modulated by energetic metabolism inside cells, in which glycolytic metabolism is predominant, favoring activation of transcriptional factors such as NF-kB, HIF-1 alpha, mTORC1, and others. If these transcriptional factors activated during chronic period may change the immunophenotype of immune cells and leads to premature death, such immunosenescence state.
Non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical strategies are adopted to counterpart these conditions. Especially, non-pharmaceutical strategies, as physical exercise and nutrition intervention might be adopted to recover the normal condition. Current studies have shown partial or complete recovery of disruption when obese or type 2 diabetes people are submitted to physical exercise training and nutritional treatments, and when both interventions are combinate the effect might be potentialized.
Pharmaceutical treatments are adopted with a specific target, but in general, have side effects. Current studies have shown minimal side effects and good responses to diseases. Taken together, non-pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical therapies appear t be important interventions, and these treatments might modulate the immune cells, change the energetic metabolism and cytokines production, leading to anti-inflammatory states.
This Frontiers Research Topic seeks a broad range of articles in the following areas:
- The metabolic crosstalk between adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and immune cells during diseases;
- The relationships between the different myokines and adipokines in response to exercise modulating immunophenotype and energetic metabolism of immune cells;
- The metabolic crosstalk between adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and immune cells during nutritional and physical exercise interventions;
- Mechanisms involved in the energy balance regulation process, whole body, and inside immune cells.
Thus, this Frontiers Research Topic seeks a broad range of articles in the following areas, and
will accept original research, reviews/mini-reviews, brief research reports, perspectives, clinical
trials, case reports, and opinion articles.
