Introduction and general guidelines This series aims to highlight the latest experimental techniques and methods used to understand the most fundamental questions in physiology research from molecular to organ function in living organisms. Review articles or opinions on methodologies or applications including the advantages and limitations of each are welcome. This Topic will cover the latest advances in technologies and up-to-date methods which help advance science.
The contributions to this collection will undergo peer-review, but the criteria may be adjusted to fit the present Research Topic; for instance, while novelty is not necessarily decisive, the utility of a method or protocol must be evident. We welcome contributions covering all aspects of physiology and the submissions will be handled by the team of Topic Editors in the respective sections.
Frontiers in Physiology supports the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) principles for scientific data management and stewardship (Wilkinson et al., Sci. Data 3:160018, 2016).

Perspective or General Commentaries on methods and protocols relevant for physiology research.
Reviews and mini-reviews of current methods and protocols highlighting the important future directions of the field.

Section-specific guidelines Cardiac arrhythmias are a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The recent advances in cell-based models, in engineered heart tissues and in animal models of cardiovascular diseases have improved our understanding of pathological remodeling, arrhythmia mechanisms and drug effects and led to major developments in therapies. In addition to review the variety and complexity of methodological approaches for the assessment of cardiac electrophysiology to study inherited arrhythmias, this Research Topic aims to enlighten their challenges and limitations.
For manuscripts submitted to this topic, each method should be linked to a disease state or arrhythmia syndrome (for example: Brugada syndrome, CPVT, TdP etc.).
