Natural products can come from both terrestrial and aquatic organisms, and their bioactivity is currently a subject of great interest in the pharmaceutical, functional food, and even cosmetic industries. Many natural products have been proven to have many activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, antioxidant, anti-malignant, anti-laser radiation and modulation of human immune function, and have been successfully developed and applied in clinical practice. Traditional medicines have a long history of application and play an important role in disease prevention and treatment as well as rehabilitation and health care because of their precise efficacy, diverse composition and low toxicity. Traditional medicines are widely used in many countries, particularly in developing nations, such as China, India, Iran, Thailand, Vietnam, and Mexico.

Currently, most of the natural products studied refer to secondary metabolites with specific biological effects and molecular weight less than 1,500 Da. Natural products and traditional medicines are an important source of new drug development due to their advantages of low toxicity, high biological activity, unique mechanism of action and wide range of targets. This research topic focuses on the recent advances in chemical composition and medicinal efficacy of natural products and traditional medicines.
