Successful treatment of disorders associated with the autonomic nervous system (ANS) such as the regulation of analgesia, blood pressure, cerebral cortical blood flow, myocardial blood flow, and cardiac function, is challenging. Importantly, aging is affected by various environmental factors and influences diseases such as cognitive decline and dementia, cardiac events, hypertension, chronic inflammation, and chronic pain, all of which affect one’s quality of life, morbidity, and mortality.
One promising area of treatment for ANS-related conditions is neurostimulation activating somatosensory fibers, also known as electroacupuncture or acupuncture. This therapy influences the autonomic nervous system, neuronal pathways, and neurochemical systems and has the potential to alleviate pathological conditions associated with aging. As part of this Research Topic, we aim to investigate the therapeutic potential of neuromodulation for aberrant physiological conditions.
This Research Topic will welcome pre-clinical and clinical Original research, Reviews, and Mini-reviews related to neuromodulation through mechanical, chemical, and neurostimulation therapy. In particular, we would like to encourage:
1. Studies describing novel therapeutic models and approaches targeting neuroinflammation via neuromodulation.
2. Mechanistic studies focusing on neuronal activities, neuronal plasticity, central inflammation, peripheral and target organ inflammation, as well as vascular remodeling influenced by neuromodulation.
3. Functional studies that will contribute to better understanding of age-related and ANS-related conditions.
