Viral hepatitis, secondary to infection with hepatitis A (HAV), B (HBV), C (HCV), D (HDV), and E (HEV) viruses, is a global public health concern that affects millions of people due to acute and chronic infections, cirrhosis, and liver cancer. Despite the huge medical advances achieved in recent years, there are still points of conflict concerning pathogenesis and immune response.
Host-pathogen interactions analysis allows the identification of diagnosis, prognosis, and disease evolution biomarkers. To maximize these advances success, it is necessary to develop and use new molecular, bioinformatic, statistical and technical approaches to implement these tools for precision medicine. This editorial focuses on the most important research topics that deal with issues that are currently being solved, those that remain to be solved, and future research directions to achieve viral elimination as soon as possible.
The objective is to make more visible the points that are being addressed in the field of basic and clinical research. For HAV it will address new susceptible populations as well as environmental and food detections. In the case of HBV, it will consider host factors related to disease and diagnosis. On HCV, it will focus on pathogenesis, immune response, issues related to hepatocellular carcinoma development, and biomarkers of liver damage. Regarding HDV, it will consider diagnostic methodology and pathogenesis. Finally, for HEV it will consider pathogenesis, parasite interactions, new diagnostic tools in humans and animals. All critical points to achieve viral hepatitis (micro)elimination that need to be discussed will be addressed.
The emergence of omics technologies is allowing a paradigm shift in the study of infectious diseases, leading to the application of new techniques and strategies to disease diagnosis and progression. However, to ensure optimal clinical decision-making, integration with clinical and epidemiological information is essential. In this context, precision medicine aims to transform clinical practice decisions and public health measures to make them more efficient, preventive and predictive. High-throughput omics technologies provide an excellent opportunity to change the collective thinking about how we defend against infectious diseases.
