Telehealth technologies have transformed healthcare in recent years, especially during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The many benefits of telehealth during an infectious disease outbreak, such as COVID-19, include the ability to continue to provide care, while minimizing unnecessary exposure to the virus for staff, clinicians, and patients.
However, all healthcare institutions and clinicians were not equally ready for rapid adoption of telehealth. Adoption and implementation readiness depended on healthcare policy, level of clinical and operations support, broadband access, health literacy, among other factors. In support of wide-scale telehealth implementation post-COVID-19 and the rapid progress of research in the telehealth and connected health, this Research Topic will consider submissions covering:
- Telehealth and expansion of healthcare access
- Telehealth and health information and knowledge sharing
- Health equity in telehealth
- Telehealth and rural, underserved, and marginalized communities
The goal of this collection is to disseminate important and timely research about the use of telehealth and connected health in addressing the healthcare needs of patients in rural, underserved, and marginalized communities. We welcome manuscripts that focus on one-to-one or many-to-many telehealth applications, such as traditional telemedicine, direct-to-consumer telemedicine, virtual continuing education, Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes, that emphasize the utility of telehealth in enhancing care and optimizing patient outcomes.
Submissions should be focused on, but are not limited to:
- Workforce support and development
- Patient experience
- Healthcare policy
- Healthcare outcomes
- Healthcare quality
