Respiratory support is a series of significant techniques used widely in clinical which saves a great number of patients with impaired pulmonary function and respiratory failure caused by pneumonia, sepsis, trauma, and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, especially in recent years of Covid-19. It could improve oxygenation, reduce respiratory rate, and maintain normal ventilation. These techniques include oxygen therapy, high-flow nasal cannula, noninvasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation et al. Respiratory support has been improved increasingly these 20 years. Summarizing experience from past cases and keeping up with the latest technology is crucial to improve patient management and prognosis.
This Research Topic mainly focuses on respiratory support to optimize the management of patients with acute or chronic respiratory failure. The application scenarios of respiratory support comprise the home of patients with chronic respiratory failure and clinical units, such as the intensive care unit, emergency department, respiratory ward, rehabilitation ward, postoperative recovery room et al. We aimed to publish the advances, experiences, and viewpoints on these scenarios. The exploration and basic research on this topic also can be accepted.
The original research, review, case report, and comments are welcomed by this Research Topic. Meta-analysis, randomized control trial, prospective/retrospective observational study, case-control study, case serial or epidemiological study could be acceptable. The bench study or pilot study also can be considered. The scope includes, but is not limited to the followings:
• Oxygen therapy through a nasal cannula or mask
• High-flow nasal cannula
• Noninvasive ventilation
• Intubation and mechanical ventilation
• Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
