With the deepening of humanity’s exploration of the ocean, there are many kinds of functional components or bioactive substances in the ocean, which attract more and more people’s attention. The bioactive substances extracted from the ocean have become a hot topic of global research because of their wide sources, various types, diverse functions, good production, and scientific application value. According to relevant data, there are more than 1000 kinds of valuable marine organisms have been found, many of which have anti-virus and antitumor, immunity, and other effects, as well as multiple effects on the nervous system and blood. The bioactive substances are effectively separated, purified, or synthesized to enable them to be used clinically. There are many types of active substances extracted from marine organisms, including polysaccharides, alkaloids, peptides, polyether, and other substances.
Biological macromolecules such as polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acid are the main components of a marine organism and have a variety of physiological activities, such as anti-tumor, anti-oxidation, anti-virus, and immune regulation. At present, due to the complexity of the composition and structure of marine biological macromolecules, molecular structure, mechanism of action, optimal dosage and approach are not completely clear. Further exploring the chemical structure and its pharmacological activity to find out its material basis and disease resistance mechanism is still the direction of future research.
In this Research Topic, we would like to cover new findings and advances in the chemical and biological properties of marine-derived biological macromolecules such as polysaccharides and proteins, including extraction, purification, structural elucidation, biosynthetic studies, metabolomics studies, total synthesis, and semi-synthesis, as well as pharmacological mechanisms of action.
We welcome all to submit their latest research findings and review articles in this area. Original and novel Research Articles, Reviews, or Data Reports related to one or more of the following topics are welcomed:
• Identification and isolation of novel polysaccharides and proteins (polypeptides) from marine organisms
• Identification and characterization of marine biological macromolecules
• Metabolomics or genomics analysis for the discovery of polysaccharides, proteins (polypeptides) and nucleic acid
• In vivo or in vitro experimental validation of marine biological macromolecules
• The pharmacological mechanism investigations of marine biological macromolecules
