Nowadays there is a wide variety of Olympic water sports (e.g., swimming and rowing) that are performed in different environments (swimming pool, river or sea). Although they share the same approach of scientific analysis (e.g., biomechanical, physiological and anthropometric), they still differ on which are the most specific and determinant factors for winning. The amount of the existent research among those sports also differs. So, this is a chance to have an in-depth knowledge about the interaction of different key factors that help enhancing performance. We hope that this would help practitioners in their preparation on the way to the future Olympic Games.
The goal of this Topic is to address the following:
- Biophysical factors that determine performance;
- Acute and long-term effects in performance determinant factors;
- The use of different equipment and technologies to maximize the training effects;
- Valid and reliable methodologies for testing and training control, including feedback;
- Performance pathways or long-term athletic development strategies.
The aim of this Research Topic is to gather scientific knowledge of the key factors that influence performance in Olympic water sports. Additionally, we aim to provide evidence to coaches and researchers highlighting the relationship between training effects and competition demands by creating a comprehensive resource for the training, evaluation and competition processes. Specifically, we welcome qualitative (e.g., reviews) and quantitative (i.e., original works and brief research reports) research that addresses knowledge in the following water Olympic sports: swimming, marathon swimming, artistic swimming, diving, water polo, rowing, canoeing (canoe/kayak), sailing and surf.
