In the post-antibiotic era, the poultry industry is facing several challenges such as global warming, high-stocking density, and the need for cost-effective diets. It is also experiencing various stressors, including heat stress, contagious diseases, and feed mycotoxins contamination. These challenges stunt poultry growth and cause many physiological disorders. Furthermore, global food security requires increasing poultry productivity over the coming years with a special emphasis on reducing environmental impacts.
This Research Topic focuses on the use of unconventional nutritional strategies and dietary incorporation of green feed additives to promote poultry health and ensure sustainable production. We welcome Original Research and Review Articles investigating unconventional nutritional strategies and dietary incorporation of green feed additives and their impacts on poultry health and sustainable production, focusing on (but not limited to):
- Dietary incorporation of functional and unconventional feedstuffs such as insect meal, fat- and fiber-containing cereals, agricultural by-products, etc.
- Using antibiotic alternatives (phytochemicals, probiotics, essential oils, herbal extracts, etc.) to eliminate the hazard of early exposure to pathogens.
- In ovo feeding technique.
- Novel delivering approaches for nutrients and bioactive molecules such as micro- or nano-encapsulation.
- The role of functional nutrition in mitigating the negative impacts of environmental challenges on poultry health, performance, meat quality, immune responses, gut integrity, and microbial community.
- The effect of nutritional interventions on expression patterns of different genes and epigenetic modifications through appropriate omics approaches.
