Sleep research has been established as an important field of study in different disciplines including psychiatry, neurology, neuroscience, respiratory medicine, psychology, and nursing, etc. in the past few decades. Beyond the studies on basic sleep science and sleep disorders, such as insomnia and obstructive sleep apnoea, sleep health has been emerging as a new area that provides a more holistic framework for the main dimensions of sleep: regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration. As interest in sleep health continues to grow at the individual and societal levels, more measurements, instruments, and related studies of sleep health have emerged. Considerable research has established that poor sleep health is correlated with health risk behaviors (e.g., smoking and alcohol consumption), negative psychological states (e.g., anxiety, depression, and perceived stress), chronic diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease and diabetes), and physical injuries (e.g., car accidents). Irregular sleep, bedtime procrastination (e.g., use of electronic devices before bedtime), and other behaviours may seriously affect sleep health in modern society. Sleep health is critical in improving overall health status, routine monitoring and multi-level preventive measures are needed to further discover the unknown of this public health problem.
This Research Topic aims to summarize original research articles, reviews, and opinion pieces that explore the current state of sleep health, influencing factors of sleep health, and the relationship between sleep health status and key health outcomes. In identifying approaches to accurately measure, assess, and improve sleep health, the current Research Topic strives to further substantiate the significance of sleep health in the field of public health.
We welcome a series of original research, review, synthesis, and systematic review articles from researchers in the field covering (but not limited to) the following topics:
• Epidemiological review, current status, and outlook of sleep health in different regions and populations worldwide.
• Factors influencing sleep health.
• Sleep health and health risk behavior.
• Health outcomes associated with sleep health (e.g., cardiovascular disease, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases).
• Interventions to improve sleep health.
• The risks of being in poor sleep health.
• Association of sleep health with different sleep disorders.
• Optimization of accuracy and scalability of sleep health measurement instruments.
• Development of new tools for measuring sleep health.
• Sleep health and quality of life.
• Public health implications of improving sleep health in populations.
• Association between improving sleep health and achieving health equity.
