Dr. Ricardo Tapia was an Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Cellular Physiology, at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Throughout his career, he trained more than 60 researchers, published more than 150 scientific articles, and got several awards. Other contributions from Dr. Tapia to Mexican science, were the foundation of several scientific societies as well as research institutes. Unfortunately, he passed away in September 2021 during the last COVID-19 pandemic, at the age of 81. This topic is focused on showing the wide scientific fields in which he made a huge impact as part of his legacy.
The main goal of his special topic is focused on making a compilation of the great academic and scientific heritage that Professor Ricardo Tapia built throughout his career. Over more than 5 decades of research by Dr. Tapia, several graduate researchers from his Lab started to be independent and established their own research teams. Because of the huge number of students from Dr. Tapia’s Lab and the nature of the science itself, nowadays several areas of science are covered by the academic legacy of Dr. Tapia.
The scope of this proposed special topic is quite large. It can include several scientific fields, such as electrophysiology, molecular and cell biology, neurodegeneration, pathology, neuronal plasticity, and neuro regeneration, among other topics. This collection will be integrated with different types of manuscripts, including research papers, reviews, perspectives, and commentaries. Professor Tapia was always at the edge and novelty in science, as well as his legacy, which is one of the reasons we can expect good papers for publication on this special topic.
