Even after the COVID-19 pandemic, circulatory diseases remain the leading cause of disease burden worldwide and are among the most frequent causes of death in people with COVID-19. Thus, clinicians prescribe pharmacological interventions or perform surgical procedures to avoid death, venous thromboembolism, hospitalization, and other events in patients with vascular diseases. However, an evidence-based approach to choosing the best intervention or diagnostic test would be decisive for managing people with peripheral vascular diseases.
Choosing the best surgical approach or pharmacological intervention to treat a vascular disease or which is the best diagnostic test to confirm a clinical suspicion can be challenging. Therefore, an evidence-based approach is mandatory to help health professionals with clinical decision-making. New technologies such as different endoprosthesis, ablation techniques for varicose veins or micro-bubbles contrast-enhanced vascular ultrasounds are even more incorporated in practice every year. However, new applications for well-known interventions are also needed.
This Research Topic focuses on any new evidence to manage arterial, venous or lymphatic diseases, always conducted under the light of evidence-based medicine. It aims to improve the management of patients with peripheral vascular diseases by publishing relevant works focusing on the investigation, management and prevention of extracranial carotid, aortic, peripheral arteries, venous diseases, vascular access, trauma, lymphatic diseases and malformations. We aim to report important medical advances, test new hypotheses, and address current controversies under an evidence-based approach. To achieve this goal, the Frontiers in Surgery will publish systematic reviews, primary observational or interventional trials, rare case reports, vascular-related methodological studies, and papers that comment on the social, economic, ethical, legal, and political factors which relate to these aims.
