The advent of tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil and the more widespread use of immunological HLA testing have resulted in a dramatic improvement in short-term graft survival and a modest improvement in long-term graft survival. Although practice differs among centers and countries, most transplant centers return patient care to their primary nephrologists 3 months after transplantation. Hence, community nephrologists play an important role in the long-term care of a growing number of kidney transplant recipients.
The goal of this Research Topic is to provide recommendations based on latest scientific evidence to guide nephrologists in the specific care of kidney transplant recipients. The current collection will focus on non-immunological care including optimization of renoprotection in this specific CKD population and extra-renal topics such as women's health and cognitive impairment.
The main focus will be the non-immunological care of kidney transplant recipients. A non-exhaustive list of topics will be:
- Chronic kidney disease mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD)
- Cardiovascular prevention
- Nutrition
- Therapeutics in the diabetic transplant recipient
- Women's health (contraception and pregnancy in the kidney transplant population)
- Cognitive impairment
