In recent years, disastrous weather events, such as rainstorm and flood, thunderstorm high-wind, and heat wave, have frequently occurred in China, causing serious economic losses and casualties. For instance, the extreme heavy rainfall and floods in the Yangtze River Basin during the 2020 Meiyu season, the record-breaking heavy rainfall in Henan Province in July of 2021, and the life-threatening heat wave associated with droughts in southern China during summer of 2022. Yet formation and evolution mechanisms of convective weather systems are greatly complex and impacted by numerous factors, including thermal process, dynamic process, and underlying surface. In this regard, severe weather events, particularly severe convective weather events, have been gaining soaring attention.
The Research Topic aims to (1) reveal observational characteristics of severe weather events and their environmental conditions and cloud-precipitation processes; (2) develop advanced numerical forecast methods with big data; and (3) investigate trends and possible causes of severe weather events during past decades.
We invite Original Research, Methods, Perspectives, and Review Articles that may help deepen our understanding of severe weather events and their formation mechanisms. Papers called in the Research Topic will address the following themes, but not limited to:
• Observation characteristics of severe convective weather events
• Formation Mechanisms of convective systems
• Mechanisms of special heavy rainfall or thunderstorm high-wind events
