Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) methods are increasingly widely used to bridge the gaps between the evidence base for best clinical practice, what actually happens in practice, and the achievement of better population health outcomes. Among a range of quality improvement strategies, CQI methods are characterised by iterative and ongoing use of specific processes to identify quality problems, develop solutions, and implement and evaluate changes. The application of CQI processes in health is evolving and evidence of their success continues to emerge. There is, however, a need to enhance understanding of how best to implement, scale-up and evaluate CQI programs for the purpose of improving quality of care and population health outcomes in different contexts.
This research topic aims to attract articles that add to knowledge of useful approaches to tailoring CQI methods for different contexts or purposes, and for implementation, scale-up and evaluation of CQI interventions/programs. Examples of questions that would be appropriate for submission for this research topic include:
- How can the design and conceptualisation of CQI methods be refined to enhance uptake and effective application in different contexts to achieve better population health outcomes?
- What are the barriers or enablers for effective application of CQI methods in different contexts?
- What policy levers can be used to support effective implementation and scale-up of CQI interventions in different contexts?
- What is the role of community members in the development and implementation of CQI methods? How can community members be most effectively engaged in CQI processes?
- What methods are appropriate to evaluate the effectiveness of CQI programs in improving population health? What are the strengths and limitations of these methods?
- What methods are useful in enhancing understanding of the mechanisms by which CQI contributes to improved quality of care and health outcomes at a population level?
We welcome submissions from a broad range of contexts and a variety of stakeholders. We especially encourage submissions relevant to low and middle income countries, or for populations that have relatively poor access to good quality care or relatively poor health outcomes. We will consider a range of article types for this research topic, including original research, theory, methods, protocols, reviews as well as evaluation, perspective, opinion and commentary articles.
