Food insecurity can be characterized by uncertain or limited access to nutritionally adequate food, which can have severe consequences for a person's health and quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to the measures adopted to prevent its spread (such as social isolation, closure of schools and businesses, travel restrictions and blockages, and loss of employment and income), were responsible for the increase in the prevalence and severity of food insecurity throughout the world. The pandemic has had direct and indirect impacts on global health and economy, the pattern of consumption, and the way food is produced and distributed. The severity of these impacts varied substantially between countries, with a greater critical impact in places that did not adopt effective public health policies which supported and protected the population, especially those most vulnerable. In this perspective, it is imperative to understand the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on food security concerning health outcomes, economic, social, environmental, and food supply problems, as well as public health policies.
