Scientific advances over the past decades have untangled the complexity of RNAs and focused on a better understanding of their function. The discovery non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) made the scientific community rethink the dogma DNA-RNA-protein and led to the discovery of the unique functions of these single-strand nucleotide chains who do not encode for a protein. Recent advances suggest that ncRNA are major players in endocrine organs and endocrine-related disorders. microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNA molecules regulating gene expression and involved in many biological and pathological processes, including the formation and development of cancer.
MiRNAs can have hormone-like activities and regulate hormone secretion. . They have an important role in modulating receptors and hormone-related signaling network, mediating the function of hormones, growth factors and cytokines. Moreover, in recent years, many studies have shown that miRNAs are involved in drug resistance of tumor cells by targeting drug-resistance-related genes or influencing genes related to cell proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis. More recently, ncRNAs have been studied as powerful markers for various endocrine diseases, including endocrine cancer.
In this article collection, we welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, Opinion and Perspective articles on the role of miRNAs in endocrine cancer. In particular, we are interested in collecting manuscripts related to, but not limited to, the following themes:
- miRNAs role in endocrine cancers;
- miRNAs as biomarkers for endocrine cancers;
- miRNAs as therapeutic targets for endocrine cancers;
- effect of miRNAs disfunction in cancer development;
- miRNA and stem cells modulation;
- differential expression of miRNA in tumor microenvironment.
