As a non-invasive technique, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role in discovering new phenomena and exploring new regularities in multi-disciplinary fields, and has sustained technical vitality and innovation. MRI systems with high magnetic field strengths can provide images with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and thus widely applied in dedicated medical applications. Whereas in scenarios with emergency medical care and industrial on-site measurements, mobile or portable MRI has become an indispensable tool for real-time evaluation and feedback. Recently, with the advances of artificial intelligence algorithms and special instrumentation designs, the SNR and image quality at low magnetic field strengths have been greatly improved. As we observed, the developments of image acquisition and reconstruction algorithms, pulse sequences, magnet array, radio frequency electronics, spectrometers and postprocessing pipelines (including motion correction and noise cancellation) have promoted the applications of low-field MRI in wide range of industrial and medical applications.
This research topic is to focus on the technical advancements in the intellect and portable MRI, covering a broad range of applications including food science, medicine, and industry. The topics shall include the most recent progress in the following areas but not limited to:
• Novel imaging methods, pulse sequences suitable for low-field MRI systems;
• Instrumental design for portable MRI;
• Relaxation and diffusion contrast at low field;
• Developments of AI algorithms subject to low-field MRI;
• Clinical application of portable MRI;
• Industrial application of portable MRI.
