Over the last years, a large body of experimental data has been generated in the attempt to understand consciousness and its neural underpinnings. One scientific approach has been to contrast perception with and without awareness in the aim to find the characteristic signatures of consciousness. Another research strategy consists of establishing an inventory of the functions that may proceed non-consciously, in order to isolate those that are exclusively restricted to conscious perception and cognition. Along the way, empirical work has been inspired and guided by various cognitive and neurobiological theories of consciousness.

The first and foremost goal of this Research Topic is to provide a “snapshot” of the current state of affairs in this fast moving research area. We welcome research articles that synthesize the state-of-the-art knowledge about the transitions between consciousness and unconsciousness. This Topic aims to provide an overview of current trends and opinions as well as perspectives on theoretical and methodological questions. We explicitly welcome articles on controversial topics and ideas, and we believe that this volume may also act as a catalyst for the scientific debate.
