In conjunction with the University of Toronto Women’s Brain Health Rounds, we are excited to present the Women’s Brain Health and Aging across Lifespan in Neurology and Neuroscience article collection. This collection would showcase the high-quality work and innovative approaches of internationally recognized researchers both in the early to mid-stages of their research careers as well as leading experts in the field encompassing clinical and basic science research with a translational link to the clinic practice directed to better women’s brain care and health.
The work presented highlights the diversity of research performed across the field spanning themes that would bridge the knowledge gaps on women’s brain health in neurology and related disciplines.
Our goal is to start a translational conversation between clinicians and research scientists engaged in women’s brain health by:
a. Building a community of practice
b. Demonstrating what is known and not known about women’s brain health and neurology
c. Generating new research and clinical directions through interdisciplinary conversations across basic research and clinical practice
d. Developing better research paradigms to elucidate the mechanism underlying women’s neurological disorders
e. Engaging clinicians and basic scientists in developing precision strategies for healthier women’s brain aging within the field of neurology and related disciplines (example: stroke prevention in women with epilepsy or MS, or brain health during menopause, etc)
The article collection would include case reports, research in progress, and clinical or basic science studies on issues affecting women’s brain health with or without a concomitant diagnosis of a neurological condition, with a focus on practical strategies and next steps.
Themes:
• Hormonal Effects on Vascular Brain Health (Stroke-related conditions and Vascular Dementia)
• Ovarian Cycle and Brain Health & Aging in Epilepsy and Migraine
• Women’s Brain Health & Aging with Neuroinflammatory conditions (MS, NMO, etc)
• Heart and Brain Connection in Women’s Brain Health & Aging
• Pregnancy & Motherhood and Brain Aging
• Preeclampsia and Maternal Aging
• Midlife Mood and Brain Aging in Women
• Women's Brain Aging with Concussion and Intimate Partner Violence
• Chronic Pain and its effect on Women’s Brain Health & Aging
• Immunosuppression in Neuromuscular Conditions and Women’s Brain Health & Aging
• Hormonal Influence on Sleep and Women’s Brain Health & Aging
• Menopause and Lifestyle Effect on Brain Health
• Social determinants of health and women’s brain health and aging
• Contraception use and women’s brain health
