Background

Coastal areas have high natural capital, offer numerous ecosystem services, and a significant percentage of the human population resides along the coastline. Major human activities, including fisheries, industrial work, and energy infrastructures installations occur along these areas. The natural coastal systems can be severely disrupted as a consequence of these anthropogenic influences. In the face of projected accelerating climate change and frequent extreme events, understanding the delicate equilibrium regulating the coastal response to external factors has become paramount to building sustainable and resilient environments. Several studies exist with the aim of enhancing our understanding of the wide range of natural hydrodynamic and morphological behavior, transport processes along coastal systems and emerging nature-based solutions to coastal flooding and erosion. These works are characterized by different scaling of analysis and often the interaction between processes occurring at different scales has not been fully explored, due to technical or computational challenges.



This Research Topic aims at advancing and broadening the knowledge, understanding, and opportunities for the development of large-scale analysis of coastal processes. The contributions should promote a correct and sustainable approach towards the enhancement of the resilience of the coastal environment to future climate change following a holistic framework. Several analyses focus on spatially and temporally limited processes and these in-depth analyses of local phenomena provided an excellent contribution to knowledge advancement. Coupling local scale processes with larger scale analysis and understanding of coastal settings is sometimes challenging but could support a better understanding of coastal dynamics and transport processes.
