The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2015 highlighted the research on natural products and neglected diseases. Part of the prize awarded the discovery of a novel antimalarial drug, artemisinin, in traditional Chinese medicine, by the Chinese scientist, Professor Youyou Tu. Despite the important advances on the comprehension of the mechanisms responsible for the benefits of phytochemicals in the last few years, only little therapeutic progress was made on many serious diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and diabetes. For this reason, we have successfully organized the first International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food in 2015 (ISPMF 2015) in Shanghai, China. The 2nd International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food will be held on Fuzhou, China (2-ISPMF) in 2017.
This Research Topic aims at creating a new and updated base of knowledge on the natural phytochemicals in preventing and managing metabolic syndrome. Evidence from epidemiological investigation shows that natural phytochemicals have received increased attention due to their considerable benefits in preventing and managing metabolic syndrome, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. This Research Topic will shape the future research direction for this important phytomedicine source. Our purpose is to feature high-quality, advanced research and knowledge, contributed by various research groups from around the world working on phytomedicines. Thus, we encourage researchers to contribute reviews and reports of their recent work on the chemistry, biology, nutrition, and biotechnology of phytochemicals.
This Research Topic will focus on phytochemicals in medicine and food, including the following aspects:
1. Phytochemicals in the prevention and therapy of metabolic syndrome.
2. The ethnopharmacology of natural products for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
3. QSAR of phytochemicals as anti-obesity and anti-diabetes agents.
4. New strategies for using phytomedicines in cardiovascular diseases.
5. Importance of natural phytochemicals in medicines.
6. Pharmacokinetics and biotransformation of phytochemicals.
