Accumulating evidence suggests that mechanisms underlying longevity and healthy aging can show distinct differences. Furthermore, unlike longevity research where lifespan is the major readout, healthy aging can include all aspects of phenotypes such as muscle aging, brain aging, and immune system aging of natural aging animals. These different aspects of aging share either common or distinct mechanisms that are still considered elusive.
Animal models in the last decade have gained a body of knowledge surrounding the genetics of longevity. However, the study of healthy aging has recently begun attracting researchers with increasing studies on healthy aging being developed. Genetics has been successful in dissecting the mechanisms of longevity therefore we believe it is crucial to the study of healthy aging and valuable to publish new findings that intersect genetics and healthy aging in Frontiers in Genetics.
This Research Topic aims to highlight discoveries in genetic and molecular mechanisms of aging, healthy aging, and age-related diseases. We welcome submissions of brief research reports, data reports, editorials, general commentary, methods, mini-reviews, opinions, and original research covering the following topics (but not limited to):
• Explore how different interventions affect the interactions between the aging or healthy aging mechanisms
• Neurotransmitters and neuropeptides in aging, healthy aging, and age-related diseases
