With the development of the social economy, the diversification of human needs, and the continuous development and utilization of various plant resources. Special crops have attracted more and more attention, and the economic benefits of special crops have increased largely. Special crops mainly refer to crops with small cultivation areas, special purpose, and economic value. Special crops include commonly cultivated crops with specific genetic traits, particular purposes or application value types (Such as fragrant rice and colored rice, colored wheat, sweet corn, waxy corn, etc.) and limited cultivation areas, certain requirements for the growth environment, strong regionality, and small-scale cultivation crops that meet the special demands of the market. The development of the special crops industry has also exposed many problems, such as growth characteristics of special crops, gene mining of special components, and the protection and utilization of germplasm resources. Therefore, in-depth research on the cultivation and breeding of special crops is urgently needed.
This research topic aims to explore the growth laws of special crops, the formation laws of related components, as well as the prefatory research on genetic engineering breeding of special crops. We hope to provide a better view of the changes in physiological and biochemical characteristics, the metabolic synthesis and regulation of special components during the cultivation of special crops, and apply the relevant biotechnologies for research and development of specialty crops, such as molecular markers, transgenics, gene editing, etc. These basic data could be better used for the field production of special crops and the breeding of new varieties.
This research topic will cover a wide range of research on specialty crop cultivation and breeding; therefore, we invite submissions of any type of manuscript related to specialty crop cultivation and breeding research, including original research, reviews, perspectives, etc. We particularly welcome manuscripts that address:
• Growth characteristics and growth laws of special crops
• Metabolic process and regulation of crops' special components (including aroma, terpenoids, flavonoids, plant polysaccharides, etc.)
• Synthesis and identification of crops special components based on genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, etc., as well as the application of omics technology in special crops breeding
• Gene mining and genetic mechanism analysis of crops' special components
