Sex Determination and Developmental Mechanism of Crustaceans and Shellfish, we are pleased to announce the launch of Volume II.
Sex-determination and reproduction are complex mechanisms in crustacean and shellfish species. Many crustaceans and shellfish showed significant growth differences between male and female individuals. Thus, single-sex production may have dramatic economic benefits. In addition, the mechanism of reproduction is also important to be analyzed. The gonad maturation in some crustaceans and shellfish undergoes a long, while the gonad maturation in some aquatic animals only needs 1-2 months. Both rapid and slow gonad developments have negative effects on sustainable development. The slow gonad development will extend the breeding cycle, while the rapid gonad development will result in the inbreeding between the newborn animals, leading to a short life span, small size and low disease resistance. Steroid hormones have been proven to have dramatic effects on the process of sex-determination and reproduction in crustaceans and shellfish. Thus, the mechanisms of sex-determination and reproduction regulated by the steroid hormones are urgently needed to be fully understood, in order to establish the technique to produce a single-sex population and regulate the gonad development in crustaceans and shellfish.
Significant advances have been made in our understanding of the effects of steroid hormone on the process of sex-determination and reproduction in aquatic animals over the past few decades. However, relative studies were rarely found in crustaceans and shellfish. The effects of steroid hormones on the process of sex-determination and reproduction in crustaceans and shellfish will continue to be unraveled, as well as identifying the complex signaling networks and genes regulated by the steroid hormone. Identification of the novel signaling pathways and genes of the mechanism of sex-determination and reproduction, regulated by the steroid hormone, has tremendous potentials in the aquaculture industry. It plays an essential role in establishing the technique to produce a single-sex population and regulate the process of gonad development.
The goal of this Research Topic is to present an overview of the fundamental discoveries in the field of sex-determination and reproduction in crustaceans and shellfish species, regulated by steroid hormones.
