The Coastal ecosystem plays an important role in biodiversity and carbon sequestration. However, in recent decades, coastal areas have experienced a progressive increase in ecological degradation, coastal erosion and flooding processes. These processes are expected to be exacerbated by ongoing climate change and increasing human activity. Climate change will impact the littorals both in the short term by affecting the intensities and frequencies of storms, and in the long term by inducing variation in sea-level position. On the other hand, human activities, including coastal engineering, channel dredging and even coastal restoration, will inevitably affect the hydrodynamics, morphodynamics, and water quality of coastal areas. In this context, the marine environment and ecology in coastal areas, which is intrinsically multifaceted and active, are becoming more complicated under the effects of climate change and human activities.
